Porthleven lifeboat day was supported by the Solomon Browne and her crew.
As Jean, one of the committee members said “I was hear when it happened and I can recall the night in great detail. The loss was so personal to Mousehole but the world shared their sorrow with them. And it wasn’t only men that were lost; there was the Master’s wife and two children from the Union Star, leaving such memories, even thirty years later”.
“We all mourned their loss and always will”.
That was not Porthleven's only connection with the Solomon Browne. This is an extract from an email sent by Dawn, another committee member :
I had a thought yesterday that a member of the Solomon Browne crew who didn't go to the aid of the Union Star was a man called Roy Pascoe. He still works at the Penlee station but is getting on in years now.
‘As it happens I saw Roy Pascoe today and explained what you are doing on our website. I asked him if we could use his name and he agreed. He was born in Porthleven which is why I thought about the connection. He told me that there was no reason why he was not chosen to go that fateful night but that he had the privilege of zipping up the jackets of the crew who did go. What a memory!
Listen to these songs and the sound track from an author being interviewed about his book on the Solomon Browne and you will know what drives us and why we need your help to raise funds.
The crews risk their lives but it is our efforts and your money that helps ensure the crews return safe with those they have rescued
