Porthleven Lifeboat Day exists today due to a series of historic events.
Porthleven, when just a small fishing village was heading for a dramatic change.
The wreck of HMS Anson, at Loe Bar, during a severe winter gale in December 1808 attracted a large gathering. Amongst the crowd was Tobias Roberts. Tobias swam through raging seas with a rope giving those onboard an avenue of escape. Afterwards Tobias was appalled at the loss of life.
He decided Mounts Bay was in need of a harbour of refuge. His determination eventually gave rise to Acts of Parliament being passed for the development of Porthleven’s Harbour. The full facts can be found in the Ebook on sale in our shop.
1863 saw the arrival pf Porthleven’s first lifeboat. The last lifeboat to serve was Dash in 1926. The lifeboat station was stood down in 1929.
